Spring Newsletter
Welcome to our quarterly newsletter, featuring all the latest activities and updates from Sailors Creek. Spring is bursting all around and it’s brought some well needed sunshine to us all. The hedgerows are filled with flowers and new growth can be seen everywhere down at the creek. I hope you’re getting ready for summer!
A Big ‘Hello’ to our New Members
We would like to give a warm welcome to all of our new Members of Sailors Creek CIC. We know many of you will have been prompted to sign up having been to one of our events in Flushing and Falmouth where we were delighted to talk about the important work we are doing at Sailors Creek and our plans for the future. We sincerely hope that you will enjoy coming with us on our journey as we continue to regenerate the Creek and together with our Forest Garden create a beautiful place where people can engage directly with the natural environment.
Keep a lookout on our social media channels where we regularly post about the happenings at Sailors Creek on facebook and instagram ; upcoming events on our website here diary dates and news from our newsletters.
We want your stories! Whilst we continue to record the progress of the regeneration project, we are keen to gather the memories, history and tales of the Creek from before the project began. We will be happy to interview and record those who have memories or tales to tell, or you may have old photographs or want to write down your stories and we will be happy to receive these and collate them into a living history of the Creek.
Send your stories and memories to:
Tree Guardian Days for April 20th and May 10th

We have two open days lined up for you to come and get involved in the forest garden. Our Tree Guardian events are open to all and an ideal way to come and visit the creek and see what we’ve achieved, so come along and help tend to our growing forest garden. Attend at anytime between 12pm and 4pm, even if you can only make it for a short time. Adopt one or more of our growing trees and learn more about natural horticulture in the process.
Please dress for the weather with sturdy footwear and gloves and bring a drink and snack.
If you haven't been to us before - park in Flushing in St Peter's Road, then take the coast path towards Penryn, just beyond the boatyard you will come across some steps. Go up the steps and continue across the field until you meet the path with the Creek on your left hand side. Continue along the path and you will come to a gateway and a sign at the head of the Creek.
See you there!
Keewaydin Progress Report
As you may know, there is a major effort underway at Sailors Creek to save the 1913 Lowestoft Sailing Trawler Keewaydin, which was in need of renovation after being neglected in the creek for some time. Headed by Spike Davies, this demanding project is nearing fruition and we wish him and his team all the best in their courageous endeavour. Thanks to the support of our members and the success of our crowdfunding efforts they have managed to secure the necessary materials and timber to continue through the Spring and Summer.
The framing has been completed and the team is now getting started on the planking. Some of the rigging has also been sent for repair and we offer our sincerest thanks to T Nielsen and Co. for stepping up and helping with this part of the project. The aim is to try and refloat Keewaydin in the autumn and continue the renovation with her out of the floating dry dock she has been in.
Without all the generous support they have received this project would simply not be possible, so keep an eye out for more ways to help or get involved and for regular updates go to https://www.sailorscreekcic.org
Sailors Creek Update
Mark Cann on the progress of the regeneration of the Creek. The journey, he explained, has been one of perception and reputation alongside the physical effort of clearing the rubbish. When the project started Sailors Creek was an incredibly scary, unsafe, and unwelcoming place. Nothing has been easy, everything has been a struggle, and the project had a negative reputation with many people resenting the change that needed to happen. But … bit by bit, wheelbarrow by wheelbarrow with support of volunteers and the Directors 57 tonnes of rubbish has been removed in addition to the materials that have been repurposed such as fibreglass boats and scrap metal.
The Creek is now a completely different place to when the project started. It feels safe and welcoming. Birds and wildlife will be content to make their homes among the boats and the planned reed beds will further improve the look and attraction of the Creek. The Directors’ aims are for the project to be an exemplar in environmentally conscious regeneration, one that has a positive net impact on the environment. Now we need to spread the word about the progress, which is why he was delighted to accept a Cornwall Sustainability Award for the work at the Creek in previous years.
Mark and Loz to Return
Our Directors, Mark and Loz, are due to return from their intrepid adventures in the Caribbean islands and we welcome their return having missed their invaluable input into the running of Sailors Creek. They have new projects planned and we’ll be keeping everyone posted when they’re nearing fruition.
